Description

What is linguistics? Why is it useful to you as a student of Russian? We will look at different levels of linguistic enquiry: phonetics and phonology, morphology, morphosyntax, syntax, discourse/text, pragmatics, semantics. We will review different perspectives on linguistic enquiry: synchronic vs. historical, structural vs. sociolinguistic. Students will be introduced to ways of notating morphology and phonology and will plan a research project investigating an aspect of the structures of Russian.
